5 plane-free holidays from the UK

Fear of flying? Tired of spending countless hours cooped up in a metal tube? Here's a few locations that can be reached by alternative means, leaving you to enjoy your next holiday without having to spend a single minute in an airport departure lounge.

The capital city of the Netherlands is reachable by ferry from Newcastle, Harwich and Hull. Both Newcastle and Hull departures are overnight trips, so you'll need to factor in the extra time, but there's plenty of entertainment on board. Check out DFDS and P&O for the latest deals

Europe's most romantic city is only a few hours away from London via Eurostar, which is probably how much time you'd spend transferring to the airport and flying. Tickets are pretty competitive if you book far enough in advance and you can easily do a long weekend in Paris without getting stressed about flying.

Ireland / Northern Ireland

Ireland is well connected to England, Scotland and Wales with daily ferries from Holyhead, Stranraer, Liverpool, Fishguard and Pembroke to Belfast, Dublin and Cork. You'll soon be watching rugby, exploring the Game of Thrones backdrops or enjoying a drop of the black stuff!

If you've got a spare 18 hours and are near London, then you can take an overnight coach that'll take you through France, Belgium, Germany and into the Czech Republic! Not great for a weekend break, but if you've got a little longer, it's entirely doable.
